A mushroom is a type of fungus and its structure can be described as follows:

  • Cap: The top part of the mushroom which is typically round or oval in shape.
  • Gills: Located on the underside of the cap, these are thin, vertical structures that produce spores.
  • Stem: The long, narrow part of the mushroom that supports the cap.
  • Ring: A thin, often flimsy, ring that encircles the stem, and may be leftover from the veil that initially covered the gills.
  • Volva: A sac-like structure at the base of the stem that may be present in some mushroom species.
  • Mycelium: The root-like network of hyphae (fine filaments) that grows underground and absorbs nutrients from the soil. It is often not visible as it is hidden from sight.
